The entrance, business, medical, and conference Canadian Visas services would be resumed, as per the announcement from the Indian High Commission in Ottawa. Tourist, job, student, missionary, film, and journalist are the categories that have been left out. An update from Ottawa to its travel advice states that the issuance of visas for Canadians to go to India under nine different categories is still halted.

Canadian Visas Suspensions

Following a suspension that had been in effect since September 21 due to heightened diplomatic tensions between the two countries, India started offering visa services for Canadian citizens under certain categories on October 25. The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has said that they would once again be providing services for admission, business, medical, and conference visas.

Visas for visitors, employment, students, filmmakers, missionaries, and journalists are among the categories that have been omitted. As to the notification released on Wednesday, the decision was taken after a “careful assessment of the security situation that considers some recent Canadian actions in this context.”

Canadian Visas Grant

According to the statement released on Wednesday, the choice was made following a “thoughtful assessment of the security situation that takes into consideration certain recent Canadian steps in this area.” The data on this page was provided to us by the Indian government. Only four categories have been restarted, as specified in the press release, according to India’s High Commissioner to Ottawa, Sanjay Kumar Verma. “Were forced to cease visa services temporarily due of safety and security issues,” the Indian High Commission and the Consulates General in Toronto and Vancouver had stated.

If stated in the statement, “Further choices would be taken based on continuous examination of the circumstances, as warranted.” Canada is not one of the 165 countries where e-visas are still available. The COVID-19 pandemic caused the e-visa program for Canadians to be suspended; it was only reopened in December of last year.

Allegations

On September 21, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in the House of Commons that there were “credible allegations” of a possible connection between Indian agents and the June 18 murder of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. As a result, the issuing of visas was put on hold indefinitely.

In the immediate aftermath, both countries expelled a diplomat, and they have continued to do so. Following a warning from New Delhi to withdraw their diplomatic immunity if they continued their job, 41 Canadian diplomats were expelled from India earlier this month. Although India has continued to maintain the intended “parity” in the number of its diplomats, Canada has denounced this behavior as a “mass expulsion” of its diplomats.

The allegations against Nijjar, albeit coming from India, were never put to the test in a Canadian court. No proof of New Delhi’s role in the murder has been offered by Canada as yet.
